This device is an autonomous recording unit that records bird songs. These bird songs allow us to determine the host community composition across our mosquito surveillance sites. Since West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted from mosquito-to-bird and vice versa, knowing how rich or diverse birds, or WNV hosts are in areas around St. Tammany parish will help better our understanding of the role that host diversity has in naturally occurring WNV ecology. This will ultimately give us another tool to better predict when and where WNV may occur next so that we may control it’s spread and minimize transmission to humans.
